On Tuesday, October 18, Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel and Super Bowl Champion XLI and 2002 BCS National Champion Mike Doss will be in town, courtesy of the Bryan Area Foundation, Altenloh, Brinck & Co., and Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers, to speak to the community about leadership.
This free event is an opportunity for attendees to hear what both accomplished men learned from the game of football that helps them be successful today.
All this will take place at the Bryan Arts and Education Center, 325 W. High St., Bryan, with doors at 6 p.m., presentation at 7 p.m., and photo opportunities at the conclusion of the evening.
James P. Tressel became the ninth president of Youngstown State University in 2014 and has been busy moving the campus forward on many fronts ever since.
Under President Tressel’s leadership, enrollment increased for the first time in five years, the academic quality of freshmen classes has continued upward, student retention is up, and the university has solidly focused on student success – graduating on time, with little or no debt and with a job or plans for further education.
In addition, the university is hitting record fund-raising levels, keeping the lid on tuition costs, expanding scholarship opportunities, and increasing both university and private housing options across campus.
A native of Northeast Ohio, Tressel graduated from Berea High School in suburban Cleveland in 1971.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1975 and a master’s degree in Education from the University of Akron in 1977.
He also holds honorary degrees from YSU in 2001 and Baldwin-Wallace in 2003. He came to YSU in 1986 as head football coach.
In 15 years, including six as executive director of Intercollegiate Athletics, YSU appeared in the playoffs 10 times and won four national championships.
In January 2001, Tressel left YSU to become head football coach at Ohio State University. In 10 seasons, he guided the Buckeyes to the 2002 National Championship and seven Big Ten Championships.
After leaving Ohio State, Tressel served as executive vice president for Student Success at the University of Akron, and then returned to YSU in 2014 as president.
Among his many honors: Chevrolet National Coach of the Year, the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, the American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, the Paul “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year, and the Sporting News National Coach of the Year.
He was inducted into Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. At YSU, he received the Heritage Award in 2008 and was inducted into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013. He was enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2015.
He has published two books, has given hundreds of presentations and lectures across the country, and has had extensive involvement in fund raising and philanthropy, including the recent $1 million gift to create the Jim and Ellen Tressel Student Work Opportunity Endowment Fund at YSU.
Tressel’s wife, Ellen, is a YSU graduate and an accomplished businesswoman and philanthropist who remains engaged in charitable causes and community organizations in cities where she and her husband have built careers and raised family, including Youngstown, Columbus and Akron.
She began her own financial career in her family’s business in Youngstown and served 17 years at Butler, Wick and Co.
They are the proud parents of four accomplished adults: Zak, Carlee, Eric and Whitney. Their grandson, Jonathan James, and granddaughter, Rose Marie Alson, are the apples of their eyes.

Michael Doss was born and raised in Canton, Ohio, the Pro Football Hall of Fame city.
He lived with his mother and grandmother until the age of six when he moved in with his uncle, who served as his primary caregiver, throughout the rest of his childhood.
During these years, Michael learned that he was a gifted athlete and began to excel specifically in the game of football.
His natural ability, along with his incredible work ethic and passion for the game, led him to earning a full-ride scholarship to The Ohio State University.
While playing at this prestigious school he became a four-year letterman, three time All American, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Fiesta Bowl MVP, and a National Champion.
All these accomplishments earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
After his senior year, he was drafted into the National Football League (NFL) by the Indianapolis Colts under his former coach and current mentor, Tony Dungy.
He went on to win a Super Bowl with this team alongside the great Peyton Manning.
His NFL career continued for several more years, but after retiring from football, he learned that his championship pedigree easily translated into the world of business.
Michael started with an internship in The Ohio State University Athletic Department, under the direction of Gene Smith, enabling him to finish his bachelor’s degree in strategic communications.
He then accepted a position with DePuy, a Johnson and Johnson company, as a medical sales representative, where he became known for his consistency and reliability in exceeding sales goals by building strong relationships with key influencers and decision makers.
He earned a President’s Club recognition by exceeding a sales quota goal (an impressive $2.8M in sales in only 10 months) through strong product demonstrations and a clear understanding of buyer needs, adding $350k in new revenues to the company.
Michael later transitioned to Zimmer-Biomet, a musculoskeletal healthcare manufacturer and marketer of orthopedic reconstructive products, sports medicine, biologics, and various surgical products.
Again, Michael grew company sales, this time by 18% over the previous year, and achieved overall sales of $5.2M.
This performance earned him another President’s Award for growing sales 53% in one year.
After achieving prominent levels of sales success at multiple companies, Michael returned to DePuy and simultaneously,
The Ohio State University to earn his Master of Business Operational Excellence degree.
During this time, he also started to give back to the community that gave him so much by serving as the President of the NFL Alumni Ohio Chapter in Columbus, Board Member of Champions for Play, and Founder of the Michael A. Doss Foundation.
His most recent professional endeavor has been the challenge of earning his real estate license and transitioning his career into commercial and residential real estate.
He now works for The Robert Weiler Company where he is once again bringing his championship mindset and work ethic to achieve professional and personal success for himself, his wife and three daughters while giving back to the community.
