Survey: Community Newspaper Readers Vote, Trust Paper To Inform

PENSACOLA, Fla. – An annual readership survey conducted by the National Newspaper Association shows that community newspaper readers are voters, and they rely on the newspapers for trustworthy information on the candidates.

NNA surveyed more than 1,000 people from rural and urban communities across the country, and 85% of community newspaper readers said they are “very likely” to vote later this year or in 2020. Only 73% of non-readers said the same.

Out of seven news sources, community newspapers also ranked as the most trusted source for information about candidates running for office. TV news — from both national networks and cable news channels — was the next most trusted source, while respondents rated “Facebook or Twitter” as least trustworthy.

The NNA survey also returned encouraging results about public notices. Both readers and non-readers of community newspapers rated highly the importance of public access to notices from local governments.
